Dr. Harrell on the first day the iCAT 3D X-Ray & the 3dMD facial capture unit was installed in the office in 2005.

Dr. Harrell graduated in 1971 from the University of Alabama Tuscaloosa, AL with a BS degree in Chemistry & Math and minored in Biology. He graduated from the University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB) School of Dentistry with a DMD degree in 1975. He received his certification in Orthodontics from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadephia, PA in 1977 .

Dr. Harrell is married to Joyce Tatum Jackson Harrell since 1974. She is known as "Miss Jay". Jay teaches 3 year olds at Jacob's Ladder, a Pre-School program at The First United Methodist Church, where Jay and Bill go to church. They have two children, Tatum Harrell Schroeder, who is married and lives in Calera, Al and they have the First Grandson (see Grandson Section) and William (Bill) Harrell, III is in construction and also presently serves in the Alabama Army National Guard, MP section, and served in Iraq in 2003-2004. Dr. Harrell has one sister, Linda Randolph, who lives in Atlanta, GA with her husband William (Billy) Randolph.

In August of 1977 Dr. Harrell began his orthodontic practice in Alexander City, Alabama, in the building which is now Cecil's Public House Restaurant. This building was, at one time, the medical office of the late Dr. James Cameron and when Dr. Harrell began practice in 1977, he shared one side with Dr. Cameron. In Feburary 1978, Dr. Harrell moved into his office at the Medical Arts Complex behind Russell Medical Center.

Dr. Harrell taught, lectured and treated TMJ patients in association with the late Dr. Bill Farrar and oral surgeon, Dr. Bill McCarty in Montgomery, AL at the Normandie Study Group for TMJ disorders, from 1979-1985. Drs. Farrar & McCarty were pioneers and world renound in the area of diagnosis, treatment & research of Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (also known as TMJ / TMD / TMJD) and they authored numerous textbooks and articles on TMJ Disorders. Dr. Harrell also studied under Dr. Morris Hollis of Sylacauga, AL on occluso-muscular related issues of TMJ Disorders. Dr. Hollis taught at the UAB dental school and was also renound for his work in TMJ.

Dr. Harrell became a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontists (ABO) in 1989 and is a member of the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontists (CDABO) and is a member of "The Angle Society" Mid-West Component.

Dr. Harrell has been a member of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) since 1977. He served as President (1987-1988) and Vice Pres (1986-1987) of the 9th District Dental Society of Alabama and during that time served on the Alabama Dental Association's (ALDA) Board of Trustees and in the ALDA's House of Delegates. Dr. Harrell has served as the President (1990-1991) and Vice Pres (1989-1990) of the Alabama Association of Orthodontists and served as a Director to the Southern Association of Orthodontists (SAO) from 1995-1997. He also served on the SAO's Technology Committee from 2001 -2005. Dr. Harrell served as President of the University of Pennsylvania Orthodontic Alumni Association from 1999-2000. Dr. Harrell also teaches at the University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB) and the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Harrell is presently serving as the American Association of Orthodontist's (AAO) Representative to the American Dental Association (ADA) Standards Committee on Dental Informatics (SCDI). He has severed in this capacity since 2002.

Dr. Harrell serves on the Editorial Review Board , to review potential scientific papers, for the American Journal of Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics (AJODO) and the Journal of Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology & Oral Radiology ('Triple O' or 'OOO').

Dr. Harrell is a Charter member of the Alexander City Rotary Club where he served as its President in 1997-1998.

Dr. Harrell has had an interest in 3D Imaging since the early 1980's [began on an Atari computer, (Thanks Dr. Ray)] and has numerous scientific articles & text book chapters and lectures both Nationally and Internationally on 3D Imaging, TMJ disorders and Sleep Apnea as it relates to maxillofacial growth (jaw growth).
